How to Start Podcasting Tuesday, Nov 10 2009

So, you have finally decided that you are going to ride the Podcasting wave and launch your own Podcast. Let me congratulate you because you have taken a decision that will allow you to use the latest technological advancement. There are number of Podcasters airing their shows these days.

Many more are coming up every day to join them. But this fact should not stop you from beginning Podcasting. You should have no fear of competition in your mind because the potential of Podcasting is immense and there is still lot more to be done.

Podcasting has become so easy today that you need not be a genius or a hard core techie to start Podcasting. With any body entering this field, many of the Podcasts available are nothing but plain junk. Do not be afraid of the competition. Just try to produce quality that will keep you stand tall among the quantity produced by the crowd. However, in the process you will be able to create a crowd of fanatic subscribers, who will provide a new dimension to your Podcast.

Choosing the Right Topic

First of all, pick up a sheet of paper and a pen, and note down the subjects of your interest for starting your Podcast. Here are few tips on how to add more topics to this list. Think about the things that you do when you are free. Also think about the things on which most of your money is spent.

Note down the movies, music, TV shows, games, political parties, philosophies, books and religions that are interesting to you. You will see that your list is getting bigger and bigger. If a particular topic interests you, possibilities are that it will be of the interest to some other people also and they will listen to your show. After listing the topics, you can shortlist a few and then pinpoint a theme and topic for your Podcasts.

Visiting Pod cast Directories is Very Helpful

Alternatively, you may visit different Podcast directories. http://www.howtostartapodcast.com/ has a big list. This can be very helpful and give you some brain storming ideas. Visiting them will also let you know that how many people are interested in your potential Podcast. There may be a lot of competition in it or there may be no competition at all. However, you need not worry in either case. More competition is the indication of the fact that the number of potential listeners is more.

It is also advisable to download some shows of different Podcasts that you find really interesting. Analyze them carefully. Note down what attracted you and what are the drawbacks in the existing Podcasts. Try to imagine had you prepared the show how would have you improved it. When you have to compete with an already established show with loyal subscribers, it is better to start a complimentary show instead of directly competing with them.

Podcasting Trend Tuesday, Sep 8 2009

Podcasting has all the ingredients to become a major technology trend. Podcasting has started with little fanfare but has the potential to become a giant wave due to a number of factors going for it. The word Podcast might have been roughly derived from iPod and broadcast (it sure sounds like that to me so don’t hit me if I am wrong! ).

The process works pretty much like radio except that the broadcast is done via mobile devices and the power of content delivery via the internet. This new form of broadcasting of information opens up tremendous opportunities for dispersion of information, entertainment and news.

Podcasting is a fairly new technology and people are building up refined applications to use this medium effectively. Advantages of Podcasting are making the proposition attractive enough for major companies to consider it a serious communication mode. RSS 2.0 is the chosen form for podcasts and newer versions of this feed system are expected soon.

Inherent advantages of podcasts are:

No need to invest in a new piece of hardware: Podcasts are easily available to all users of iPod and similar mobile .The sheer size of the iPod cult if I can call it that, is increasing at a scorching pace. All a user needs to do is choose the subscriptions which he or she would like to subscribe to and download the programmes.

New lease of live to radio programmes: Radio programmes have been revived by the new generation of podcasters. A number of old radio programmes which have had a mass following in their hey days are now being evaluated to be cast via podcasts. A huge chunk of high quality content becomes available thanks to this revival.

Can advertisers be far away? Advertisers have the ability to identify new advertising opportunities at the slightest whiff and Podcasting forums are already working hard to get the advertising industry hand in glove with the Podcasting community. Influx of advertising dollars will lend more credibility to Podcasting and this medium will be taken more seriously as well.

On demand broadcast: Podcasters and listeners rule this medium by offering a high level on-demand listening. You can use this service at the time when you want to, pretty much like video on demand but has greater success due to the low demand of bandwidth. This is probably one of the biggest advantage of Podcasting and might be the core reason for it to success phenomenally.

Your own Podcast studio and very little investment: So who are podcasters? A podcaster can be anyone who has access to the internet, a decent computer and some software knowledge. Podcasting requires very little investment by way of hardware and software. This advantage of Podcasting can thus be done by almost anyone who has an interest in it and has some content to share with the rest of the world,

Creativity is highly rewarded in the podcaster’s world: Content is king and high quality creative content is instantaneously rewarded by the Podcasting community which can be measured by the number of subscribers. Thus it is quite easy to gain overnight success if the content of the broadcast is unique and exciting.

Podcasting thus has number of benefits both the for the community within and without. A unique mass media which does not cost a lot to distribute and develop content for. Like all new technologies, the technology will have some teething issues but the force promoting it should be good enough to get the technology roaring with success in the very near future.

4 Reasons to Create Your Own Podcast for Your Business or Hobby Monday, Sep 7 2009

Podcasting is a powerful, inexpensive and easy new medium for sharing your message with a focused and passionate audience. As a podcaster you’ll become a recognized expert in your area of interest or expertise.

You can use podcasting to boost your credibility, build your list of customers and gain a fan base very quickly. This makes podcasting a great tool to promote a product or service.

Here are four reasons you need to start a podcast today whether for fun or for business.

1. Become a Recognized Expert or Celebrity in Your Chosen Niche

How would you like to be recognized as an authority in your area of interest or expertise? Podcasts are popping up all over the internet on every imaginable subject.

But things are just getting started. Chances are you can still be one of the first to start a podcast in your chosen niche.

You can quickly be recognized as an expert in your field. This is a powerful way to build a following or strong customer base.

Think about when you hear or see someone on the radio or TV. They have instant credibility. As a podcaster you will enjoy the same credibility. People will value your opinion.

You can leverage this position to influence your audience, promote yourself and even make money. If you have an audience that is interested in a specific niche, there will always be others who want to reach that audience, too. This is how you find advertisers or sponsors.

2. Quickly Gain a Very Focused Audience

With the right content, you will gain listeners fast. Not only that, but your audience is potentially worldwide. You can offer quality content to keep in touch with your customers and keep yourself, your product or your service in the front of their mind.

Podcasting is a great way to cut through the clutter and reach your audience. This is not like the radio where your listener is waiting for something that interests him. He has chosen to listen to your podcast because it interests him.

This makes podcasts very effective for promotion, marketing and growing a focused audience.

3. Podcasting is a Convenient, Automatic and Inexpensive Way to Reach Your Audience or Customers

One reason that podcasting has become so popular is that it’s automated. Listeners subscribe to your feed. This means they don’t have to remember to return your site to check for new content. When you post new content, it’s automatically downloaded to your listener.

Because listeners subscribe to podcasts, they have chosen to receive your content. They have already shown interest in your message by subscribing. In addition, a podcast does not get lost in SPAM like with e-mail. You can be sure your message is reaching a focused audience.

This means your content automatically reaches your audience without any barriers increasing the efficiency and ease of delivering your message.

Because your podcast is delivered over the internet, it’s a very inexpensive means of communication.

4. With Equipment You Probably Already Own and For Very Little Cost, Your Podcast Could be Online in Just Hours

All you need to start your podcast is a computer, a microphone and a broadband internet connection. Later, you can buy nicer gear if you want. For now you can get started with very little cost. All you need is something to say and a desire to say it.

If you were to try and do the same thing on the radio, you would have to face all kinds of FCC regulations to learn and follow. Plus you would have the expense of broadcasting. Podcasting removes all of that cost and trouble.

With my how to podcast tutorial web site, your first podcast can be online in less than a day.

SUMMARY

Podcasting is a powerful and easy way to reach a focused audience. Whether for fun or to make money, podcasting allows you to easily reach a focused and loyal audience. You can brand yourself as an expert or celebrity in your niche.

You can get started with no more gear than your computer, a microphone and a broadband internet connection. People could be listening to your podcast in less than a day. Make your voice heard.

Home Business Exposure On Yahoo! Tuesday, Jul 28 2009

Everyone who has ever been on the internet has heard of Yahoo! If you haven’t, then quit reading and go visit now. Yahoo is such a popular site that my website ranking toolbar from Alexa shows a number “1″ under website ranking…that’s popular. So it would probably be a good idea to get some exposure on Yahoo! for your home business.

Here is a great way to get in at the beginning of a trend. If you’ve never heard of a podcast, then you should definitely get up to speed on what they are. In brief, they are archived audio files usually in mp3 format that you can download into your player such as an iPod. Hosting those files is called podcasting. People can listen to you whenever it is convenient for them.

Podcasting is in its infancy as of late 2005. Yes, there are a lot of podcasts, but users are very few compared to the total number of internet and iPod users. So how does Yahoo! fit in? Well, one of the things about podcasts is that they have usually been hard to find or search for. None of the major search engines had done much with them as of this writing.

Enter Yahoo! You can now go to http://podcasts.yahoo.com and search for whatever you want. Many of the podcasts are vocal in nature such as instruction or the old teaching tapes. Here is your opportunity - home business is a very frequently searched topic on any search engine, so it is only a matter of time until it is frequently searched on the Yahoo! podcast site as well. You can get traffic to your site by making your own podcasts and submitting them to a site that Yahoo! searches such as iPodder.

There probably won’t be an incredible amount of competition for your home business for some time. Meanwhile, you have the opportunity to be a step ahead and be seen as an expert. You will be an expert by the time everyone else figures out that they should get into podcasting too. There is a great article on how to get started in podcasting at the website http://www.MCPromotionsPress.com

This time in podcasting is like the times in the mid 90’s when you could easily get great search engine ranking with just a little effort. Your home business can get some great exposure - Don’t miss the ride!

IPod Video Casting Tuesday, May 26 2009

Can you believe the ultra small new thin Apple iPods? These are very cool personal technology gadgets indeed. Now these tiny thin devices have complete Video Capabilities. Steve Jobs the CEO of Apple announced the creation of a newest additions and improvements to the iPod with a 2.5-inch full color flattest panel display and video-playback capabilities. Are you impressed? Well, you are not alone as the official iPod website has gotten 30 million hits and almost tied the one day hits with Hurricane Katrina.

Ah, but it gets even better as the iPod hosts a 320 X 240 pixel resolution and has bettered all personal tech devices its size. Now even the US Military is hot for iPod video-casting for the troops, yet this off the shelf technology will cost only $299 for a 30 GB or $399 for 60 GB version and well we know that the Military cannot even buy a hammer or toilet seat for that?

Well do you want one yet? I bet you do, but more importantly investors in Apple Stock are betting on it, along with the company. They are talking about selling songs for $ .99 and movies, full length for $1.99 download. One thing for certain is that “Vidcasting” is the next new thing. Think on this

Podcasting, Podcatching and What To Do Tuesday, May 26 2009

Podcasting is the wave of the future and a current craze on the internet. And really, they’re nothing more than mp3 files that people, known as podcasters, record and make available for download on their own terms. The biggest misconception is from the term pod. The fact is you only need a computer to download the files and from there you can listen through your speakers or headphones. An iPod is not necessary, as mentioned, your computer or other mp3 player will do just fine.

Podcasting is nothing more than a new form of radio. Some are professionally done with full production while others are audio blogs and feature a host or hosts bantering back and forth. Still, other shows can feature “podsafe” music or music that has been made available for use by podcasters. They can inform or just entertain, there are literally thousands of podcasts available.

Podcasts can be manually downloaded from diffrent directories on the internet, through the shows’ website or can be downloaded regularly through “podcatching” software, such as ipodder. The listener will enter into the program an URL that points to an xml file. This allows that program to download new episodes whenever they are made available.

Anyone with the dedication can create a podcast. You just need at least one microphone, a computer, an audio capturing device or software and a voice. There are a million different setups and the potential podcaster will need to find what setup works best for them. Some people are actual djs and invoke high-end mixer setups, while others are hobbiests and record with the bare minimums, either way it still seems to get out there.

Even big names like Rush Limbaugh and Glenn Beck are beginning to offer mp3 “podcast” like downloads through their pay service. Also, Adam Curry, the creator of ipodder just launched a podcast showcase on Sirius satellite radio.

Podcasting is just in it’s early days, the possibilities are endless.

So You Want To Be A PodCaster Sunday, Mar 15 2009

You think you have what it takes to compete in the exploding underground-industry of Podcasting and have a great concept for a Podcast?

Have you checked all of this off your list?:

• A Great Idea for a New Podcast!

• A Killer Script (No the same as a great concept)

• Recording Software

• A Microphone

• A Webpage (and plenty of bandwidth)

• An Rss Feed for your Podcast episodes
• A Well Laid Out Plan on How to Market Your New Podcast

So how did you do?

Were you able to check everything off the list? Most of these items are necessary to create and host your podcast, and if you haven’t bothered with a good marketing plan yet? Well, keep your fingers crossed that your family and friends like the sound of your voice because it is unlikely that many other people will ever hear your Great New Podcast show.

Don’t shoot the messenger. It is a dog-eat-dog world out there with too many businesses competing for the same Podcast audience. What’s that you say? We are not talking about businesses? Only a free, donation based, underground, podcast? Well, that may be true, but the world of podcasting has grown exponentially over the past year and that means there are a large number of Podcasters out there who are competing for the same listener base that you are. In fact, according to Forrester Research, by 2010 the multitude of podcast shows should have around 12.3 million regular listeners.

And don’t forget that the business world knows a good thing when it sees it; resulting in more and more businesses jumping on the Podcast bandwagon over the past few months.

But that’s okay; because there’s still plenty of room in the Podcast Empire and you can learn valuable lessons from the business world…

They know how to put together a classy Podcast. They know how to advertise. They know how to network. And possibly most importantly, they know how to market a Podcast. And you can scoff at the corporations invading the tranquil Podcasting Nirvana all you want, but the fact remains… If you want to get your new Podcast out to the masses, you had better bone up on some Marketing Basics.

So where do you start?

Well, one of the most important things that you can do is to understand and have a working knowledge of your business Value Chain. What’s a Value Chain you ask? Essentially it is the logical flow of your new Podcast business starting with your original concept and following every step through until the finished product hits your listener’s iPod.

Did you catch that? In other words, your Podcast’s Value Chain consists of all the steps you need to take to get your product into the hands of your listeners.

A Podcast’s Value Chain will consist of 10 steps:

Concept -> Pre-production -> Post-Production -> Publishing -> Hosting -> Promotion -> Community/Search -> Downloading -> Show Viewing

If you produce a podcast show, you will touch on each of these steps. And while each step may offer you a unique set of challenges, each will also provide you with their own opportunities to monetize and market your new show.

The Value Chain of your Podcast Show will always be at the core of your venture whether you utilize it or not. This being the case, the more aware you are of your Value Chain, the easier it will become for you to take advantage of and capitalize on each step of the process.

This is the first in a series of articles that explain how to take advantage of your Podcast Show’s Value Chain and help you to maximize your Show’s listenership. To see the following articles, please visit http://www.podcastempire.com.

Pods and Vlogs and Traffic Monday, Sep 1 2008

My daughter has just lost her IPod!

Why… Because I have finally figured a way to listen to:
…..MP3’s
…. Podcasts
…. Vlogs
…. and stay productive

For a while now, I have been living a life of quiet desperation.
I have just not had the time to listen to all the recordings of
live meetings, information, shows, training, live calls…….

I have been longing for the days of scripts, PDF files, that I
can download, quickly scan to find what I need, or nuggets of
wisdom, new information or methods. I have been feeling very sorry
for myself, because I have been missing out on a whole new segment
of new information.

The problem that I have with these podcasts is that in most cases
one has to listen to around 40 minutes or more of audio to find
that “gem” of information, that new method, that new way of doing
things. Problem is that there is also a lot of useless nonsense
that one has to listen to. The end result of this is that I have
downloaded numerous live discussions, numerous marketing calls,
numerous training sessions…. and they have all been collecting
dust on my hard drive.

Until now… because I have become tired of being screeched at by
the “pod people” and have finally joined their ranks. I am now
also “hearing voices from the alien mothership.

If you’ve seen the classic camp remake “Invasion of
the Body Snatchers,” you know what “pod people” do when they
find a human who has not been replaced with an identical alien
born of a pod: point and screech open-mouthed at the non-pod
person.

See Christine Boese’s article on CNN headline News for
information on the “pod” people
http://www.cnn.com/2004/TECH/12/08/podcasting/

So what is this podcasting, anyway? The word “podcast” is a
concatenation of the words IPod and broadcast. Podcasting is
online audio content that is delivered via an RSS feed. The
underlying technology used for podcasts, called
RSS (Really Simple Syndication) is capable of containing any
type of media including audio, video, graphics, and more.

Many people liken podcasting to radio on demand. However, in
reality, podcasting gives far more options in terms of content and
programming than radio does. In addition, with Podcasting,
listeners can determine the time and the place, meaning they
decide what programming they want to receive and when they want
to listen to it.

Listeners can retain audio archives to listen to at their
leisure. While blogs have turned many bloggers into journalists,
podcasting has the potential to turn podcasters into radio
personalities… unfortunately not all of them are good and in
many cases not well prepared either.

Vlogs are just like blogs or podcasts, except that content is
recorded as video instead of text or audio.

All you need to get started is podcasting software. Once you
download and install the software, simply add one of the feeds
you may want to listen to, e.g. CNN’s podcast feeds. The podcasting
software will automatically check for updates and download the
files to your computer so you can load them onto your MP3 player.
I personally like ITunes, for reasons pointed out a little way
down, but are many others. Some desktop options are:
• iTunes (Windows/OS X)
• Juice (Windows/OS X/Linux)
• jPodder (Windows)
• iPodderX (OS X)

Some web-based options are:
Audioblog.com(http://www.audioblog.com) - phone your podcast in!
ClickCaster.com(http://www.clickcaster.com) - excellent audio.
Odeo.com(http://odeo.com) - most popular.
Podomatic.com(http://www.podomatic.com) - fun light-hearted approach.

Some other podcasting resources:
Podcasting Tools - http://www.podcasting-tools.com
Podcast Alley - http://www.podcastalley.com
PodcastBunker - http://www.podcastbunker.com
Podcasting News - http://www.podcastingnews.com

Podcasting does have a number of market opportunities though:
Apple is advocating the use of podcasts for education.
See:
http://www.apple.com/education/solutions/podcasting/server.html
Of course it does involve the purchase of IPods and servers
though!. It’s a free market, I think.

What about:

1. Self-Guided Walking Tours - Informational content.

2. Music - Band promotional clips and interviews.

3. Talk Shows - Industry or organizational news, investor news,
sportscasts, news coverage and commentaries.

4. Training - Instructional informational materials.

5. Story - Story telling for children or the visually-impaired.

I am very curious to see how this market evolves and whether
this publishing medium will evolve into daily use. Currently,
only the technical crowd has endorsed podcasting as a new
audio medium, but the potential is real and the process is
not overly complex.

However, back to my life of quiet desperation and why did
I join the pod people?

I was watching my daughter adding a number of songs to her IPod
the other day. Suddenly something clicked in my mind. You see,
I spend a number of hours weekly on the highways and byways on my
way to clients. During this travel time, I used to listen to my
favourite radio stations. Then I got clever and cut some CD’s of
downloaded podcasts to listen to, whilst wending my way to clients.
But cutting CD’s also take time.

When I looked at my daughter’s IPod…. I am sure you know what
happened. Now I am one of the “pod people”, whilst traveling to
client meetings. Traffic has now become one of my productive
times as well.
